Camera Angles and Shots and Downton Abbey- soical class- camera shots and angles

Shoots are used to set the scene and to show as much as possible.  this adds atmosphere and time and location are there established shoots. shows the setting and the story line. it may not be always at the beginning it can appear part way through the narrative because they have changed setting.

-the wide angle- shot is to get a group of people or a wide scenario.
-high shot- mass destruction, looking down, showing how big things are
-medium shot- draws attention to people, follow the long shot, the director is enabling the audience to become more familiar so you can see the facial expression and body language. waist and above.
-close up- more dramatic and its just their face, focus attention and their emotions, shows significance to it , shows emotional state.
- extreme long shot- extra time and the place of the setting for the story line and is used at the beginning of the episode.
- extreme close up its just the face of the person or the thing and cant see anything else create tension or emotion or so you can simply just read it. draws them further into the characters view point. it restricts the audiences view, can be weakness or power because of it. creating tension
-one shot - one person in it
-two shot- two people in the shot in the frame and expresses the relationship between them two people
-long shot- to be able to see a person head to toe.

Downton Abbey- social class- camera shots and angles

Having watched a 4 minute extract of  Downton Abbey and from the extract i found that angles and shots  and movement can state a persons social class.

When a servant is with a upper class person they are by their side in the shot as the upper class person is in the centre. It tracks the women in the grey because she is of a higher social class. it shows the full view of her because she is more significant. Main characters are in the foreground of the shot while the back ground people are in the background. they are less important than the main characters. The servant walks away while the upper class ladies stay there making them out to be more important (long shot). This also accrues at the beginning when the women in black and the women in grey are working and people in a lower status as them in the background move out the way of the long shot and are only their for a short amount of time. this makes them less important in the show and defiantly lower in the social class.

When the upper class person shows concern to a servant then that person goes more towards the centre of the shot but not exactly in the middle. Showing that they are getting the respect and are being treated equal to the upper class but not exactly up to their social class. As servant are mainly on the side of a shot while the upper class person is mostly in the centre of the shot this shows that upper class are more important. Also to show that the upper class is more important they angle the camera at the dog on the ground and rose it so it looked at the upper class person showing that they are higher than a dog (dog could symbolise the servants). Also that the main servant had a more higher shot than the chauffeur because he is slightly more higher in the social class than him but neither of them are as high as the lord of the house who's presence is very dominant. Clearly stating he is upper class and has plenty of money.

My definition of TV Drama

My definition of TV drama is a series of episodes that is filled with drama which the audience can relate to, they try to create verisimilitude by the use of relatiatble characters, costume sutiable for storylines and setting sutiable for the storyline as well, that are similar to real life with real life situations that most people find themselves in and  make them more extreme or the same for the enjoyment of the audiences and also make them normally happen all at once to make that episode more interesting. So TV dramas are basically just an extreme version of the audiences life.

Areas of representation exam

Areas of representation

Age
Different programmes are appealing to different ages groups because of the narrative, different age groups are represented in TV dramas becasue it allows a larger audience group. When watching a programme about young people you would see the sterotype of: partying, sleeping, relationships, fall outs with friends, college, smoking and drink....etc personality traits you expect is bitch, energtic, over confident, shy, geeky, niave, care free. While older people are reperented in jobs, with families, children, more sophsicticated, hobby, bird watching, less energtic, knowledge. Old people like soap operas, While you people like dramas and comedies. adults on skins they are as confused as the younger people (countertype). characters on hollyoaks and misfits are messed up partying an dbreaking the law (archetype)

Ethnicity
when people are represented for the colour of their skins and where they were from. for example homeland a white american coming a muslim and his wife doesnt like it and that shows the conflict between their background and the expetance of people in a whole different culture.the pasific they all have a properganda saying that the japanese arent human and they are savages but later they find out they are just like them and they come to exeptance. lots of programmes show lots of people from different background so they arent seem as racist.

Sexuality
a sterotypical gay person is a person into fashion and camp such as from glee. they have hand movements. in a lesbian couple they think that a lesbian will be butch with short hair and in a relationship there will be a butch one and a feminie one but when its two gay men then they can both be camp and feminie. there are programmes that show the church would kick them out. a bia girl would be seen as possible someone who would want to be in a threesome. (lads intrest)

Disablity and Ability
show as physical and mental in the media, for example recently there has been paraolympics and that is covered more than the actual olympics. we see a lot more disablity shown on tv than ever before. disability can be represented in postive or negative light, they become isolated in the programme or they become more sucessful than other that have their natural ablilitesabilities. programmes such as hollyoaks.

Social Class
Social class is how you expect a show if its a high social class then they will have posh accents, big houses and lots of money like on Downton Abbey. Also then there is counsel etaste people who are of a lower class and they are sterotyped as chavs, drinking, smoking, having sexual relations with lots of people with foul language and going against the law. e.g. misfits, shamelss and water loo road. countertype is 90210 because even with all their wealth they still act as though they are lower class by the parties and sexual interaction.

Gender
most tv dramas women are represented as nice and girly, classy, at home all the time like on eatenders. men are usually thought of tough buisness men who are loud and go out drinking in the pub. women at home men out working. in eastenders. men do dodgy dealing are in charge. but there are tv shows when it completely contrasts against the sterotypes of gender. but normally in TV dramas there are very strong representation

He is self-absorbed, selfish, impulsive and incapable of taking anything short of a direct attempt on his life seriously. Even when in the most ludicrous and dangerous situations, he'll take time out to make a wisecrack. Naturally, Nathan's abrasive personality means that he's often the subject of others' ridicule and abuse. However, he almost completely lacks the capacity to feel embarrassment, shame or emotional pain from such attacks and will quite happily shrug them off.

He is always trying to get with kelly Bailey. And finally does and goes in a relationship with her. Also in one episode he is in love with simon Bellamy because of a power a tatoo artist has.
Problems in life:

A script for one scene from misfits:

setting: at the community centre, in the locker room. Simon and Alisha are making out and Alishas tops off. And Nathan strolls in with a grin on his face.

Alisha: s**t! (holds her top over the frront of her and pulls away from simon)
Nathan: Well well well beauty and the freak. Never thought you'd get with someone with out paying them. (looks at Alisha) or did you?
Simon: I did not pay for her. She is my girlfriend.
Alisha: (angry harsh tone) will you shut up and f**k off?!
Nathan: No this is too good to miss. (cheesy grin and goes towards Simon and points at his private area and shouts) Barrys got a boner. Look at it, its so small
Alisha: leave him alone. He doesnt. Just b***er off okay?
Nathan: shhhh this is a rare moment, my friend has discovered his very first boner (puts his arm around simon) welcome to manhood. Maybe you will finally hit puberty and grow some balls. (smiles at Simon)
Simon: (removes Nathans arm from his shoulder) I do have balls and pubes you've just never seen them
Nathan: That is properly the most gayest thing youve ever said to me. Would you like me to rub your nipples as well?
Alisha: Will you p**s off Nathan I'm trying to get dressed!!
Nathan: (tuns to alisha) Would you like me to rub your nipples?
Alisha: your such a jerk!! (storms off) Simon you coming?
Simon: yes (follows her)
Nathan: (shouts after them) I guess ill rub my own nipples them

Sorry for the vulgar language that is used in the script. Ijust wanted it to be real as possible
